UN Says
Eat Less Meat To Curb Global Warming
'People
should have
one meat-free day a week if they want to make a personal and effective
sacrifice that would help tackle climate change, the world's leading
authority on global warming has told The Observer
Dr
Rajendra Pachauri,
chair of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
which last year earned a joint share of the Nobel Peace Prize, said
that people should then go on to reduce their meat consumption even
further.
His
comments are the most controversial advice yet provided by the panel on
how individuals can help tackle global warning.'

Government
Paid The Charity ' Shelter' to Produce Eco Town Fact Leaflets
Shelter,
one of the
few organisations backing the plan to build new towns in the English
countryside, said it had been given £100,000 by the Government to
publish a series of 13 pamphlets, one for each proposed eco-town site.
Called
"Eco-town – the
facts", the publications are branded with the Shelter logo and claim to
assess the impact the new homes will have in the different areas. Each
one begins: "Shelter has written a series of leaflets to help clarify
the facts."
But each
20-page
leaflet focuses largely on the need for more affordable housing, with
only one paragraph addressing such concerns as traffic levels, flood
risks and pressure on public serices.
Opponents
called the
leaflets "Government propaganda" and accused ministers of trying to
mislead the public into thinking the information came from an
independent source.'

Council
Use Anti-Terror Laws To Spy On Binmen Accused Of 'Accepting Strawberry
Pop Bribe To Take Away Trade Waste'
'A council used controversial anti-terror laws to spy on
a crew of
refuse collectors after receiving a tip-off that they were incorrectly
emptying a dustbin. Officials set up an undercover surveillance
operation in an attempt to prove the three binmen were being bribed by
a newsagent to take away trade waste when he had not paid the extra fee
for it to be collected. Bury Council in Greater Manchester said the
investigation proved that the men had removed trade waste - and it also
claimed they had used their refuse truck for ‘pecuniary gain’ because
one accepted a bottle of strawberry-flavoured mineral water from the
shopkeeper.'

Lord Winston To Farm GM Pigs For Human Transplants
'Lord
Winston, the
fertility expert and Labour peer, is to begin breeding genetically
modified pigs in the next three months to produce hearts, livers and
kidneys for transplanting to humans.
Winston
has pioneered
a simplified technique to create pigs with “humanised” organs that will
not be rejected by the patients’ immune systems.
He expects
the
technique to provide a solution to the shortage of donor organs within
10 years. Attempts to transplant animal organs – xenotrans-plantation –
were abandoned because the tissue was rejected and because of fears
that animal viruses would spread to humans. Enthusiasm for the
procedure waned in the late 1990s after patient deaths.
Winston
and his
colleague, Dr Carol Readhead of the California Institute of Technology,
believe pigs can be genetically modified to exclude the dangerous
viruses.'

'THE US TREASURY will today announce a rescue of Fannie Mae and Freddie
Mac, two giant American mortgage banks, in what is likely to be the
biggest financial bail-out of recent history.
The move may trigger a bounce in global stock markets tomorrow.
However, analysts warn that some of the uncertainties that plagued the
markets last week, including worries over the duration of the credit
crunch, will persist.'

US Wants Deal To Bypass
Iraqi Parliament
'The Iraqi government may not be
consulted over the proposed US-Iraq status of forces agreement
according to a leaked draft.
The draft states, "This agreement goes into effect on the day that
diplomatic memos confirming all constitutional procedures have been met
in both countries are exchanged."
This would allow Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to accept the
agreement without referring it to parliament first - despite months of
assurances that lawmakers would be consulted.'

Obama,
McCain To Appear At Ground Zero On 9/11
Presidential
nominees John McCain and Barak Obama will appear together on Sept. 11
in New York at the site where the World Trade Center collapsed after
being hit by hijacked planes in 2001. "All
of us came together on 9/11 -- not as Democrats or Republicans -- but
as Americans. In smoke-filled corridors and on the steps of the
Capitol; at blood banks and at vigils -- we were united as one American
family," the two senators said in a joint statement issued on Saturday.
"On
Thursday,
we will put aside politics and come together to renew that unity, to
honor the memory of each and every American who died, and to grieve
with the families and friends who lost loved ones."

Historian
Demands Action on Powerful Doomsday Cults
'A
Munich-based historian Wolfgang Eggert, 46, has launched an
Internet Petition to
demand action on powerful Jewish and Christian cults that want to
instigate a nuclear holocaust to fulfill Biblical prophesy.
He thinks religious fanatics must be exposed and removed from power. He
points to the Jewish Chabad Lubavitcher sect who want to hasten
Armageddon to facilitate the intervention of the Messiah. Eggert quotes
a Lubavitcher rabbi who says:"the world is waiting for us to fulfill
our role in preparing the world to greet Moshiach" (i.e. Messiah.)
Their members include Paul Wolfowitz, the architect of the Iraq War
which began with an attack named after a Cabalist diety, "Shekinah"
("Shock and Awe"). Especially worrisome now is Chabadnik Joe
Lieberman
who visited Israel in March with his buddy John McCain. There is
concern over Sen. Carl Levin who
is Chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Other prominent
Orthodox Jews who might be part of this cult include Bush Attorney
General Michael Mukasey, Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff
and former Pentagon Controller Dov Zakheim, implicated in the
disappearance of "trillions" of dollars.'

Anti-
Terror Laws Prone To Abuse Say Amnesty International
Numerous
governments
around the world are using anti-terror laws to suppress political
dissent and civil liberties, according to a new report released by one
of the world’s most respected human rights organisations. Amid calls
for increased U.N. scrutiny, in its report, the London-based group
Amnesty International raises serious questions and concerns about the
impact of the so-called war on terror on human rights and freedom of
speech in many countries. ”There is a huge gap between governmental
rhetoric and the reality of human rights observance on the ground,”
said Amnesty in its report, entitled ”Security and Human Rights:
Terrorism and the United Nations.”
The rights
group
released its report Thursday just a few hours before the U.N. General
Assembly plenary was due to start biennial review of the ”Global
Counter-Terrorism Strategy,” a documented adopted by the member states
some two years ago. The report’s authors say in a number of countries
government leaders are violating human rights, although there is no
provision in the document that would allow them to do so while pursuing
anti-terror policies. The report says that many governments have ”rushed
through problematic laws formulating often vaguely-defined crimes, such
as banning organisations, undermining fair trial standards, and
suspending safeguards aimed at protecting human rights.”
The
so-called war on
terror, according to the report, is being used by both democratic
governments and repressive regimes alike to justify restrictions on
their political opponents and dissidents. ”Unfortunately,” the authors
say, ”countries which have long claimed to be leaders in promoting
human rights have now taken the lead the lead in enacting draconian
laws.”
In
addition to the
United States and its close allies in the ”war on terror”, the report
also names and shames several countries, including some Western
democracies, for lowering their standards on human rights in the name
of security.'

Council
finance boss gets £500,000 golden handshake despite running
Britain's 'worst' department
The
council said to be
England's worst has agreed a £500,000 golden handshake for its
finance
chief. In a deal critics described as 'a reward for failure', Liverpool
City Council's director of finance Phil Halsall, 50, will receive a
lump sum of £80,000 when he takes early retirement in April. The
authority has also agreed to enhance his pension by five years, worth
another £420,000. The pay-off to the £180,000-a-year
executive comes
months after the Audit Commission said Liverpool was the worst
financially managed authority in England.
It brings
to more than
£1million the packages awarded to just three senior bureaucrats
since a
falling-out between its Liberal Democrat leader and its chief executive
two years ago.Last night a TaxPayers' Alliance spokesman said: 'This is
a massive payout for a director who has presided over shambolic
finances at the council.'This is nothing but a reward for failure and
an insult to hard-pressed taxpayers who foot the bill.'

Children
As Young As 8 Enlisted As Council Snoopers
'The
youngsters are
among almost 5,000 residents who in some cases are being offered
£500
rewards if they provide evidence of minor infractions.
One in six
councils
contacted by the Telegraph said they had signed up teams of
"environment volunteers" who are being encouraged to photograph or
video neighbours guilty of dog fouling, littering or "bin crimes".
The
"covert human
intelligence sources", as some local authorities describe them, are
also being asked to pass on the names of neighbours they believe to be
responsible, or take down their number-plates.
Ealing
Council in West
London said: "There are hundreds of Junior Streetwatchers, aged 8-10
years old, who are trained to identify and report enviro-crime issues
such as graffiti and fly-tipping."
Harlow
Council in
Essex said: "We currently have 25 Street Scene Champions who work with
the council. They are all aged between 11 to 14. They are encouraged to
report the aftermath of enviro-crimes such as vandalism to bus
shelters, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, fly-tipping etc. They do this
via telephone or email direct to the council."

The
Super Vaccine That Protects You From All Types Of Flu For LIFE
'A
super-vaccine that
could give permanent protection against all forms of flu is being
developed by British doctors. The once-in-a-lifetime vaccine could do
away with the need for an annual jab, according to researchers at
Oxford University. At present, the current jab has to be given every
winter to match different circulating strains. If successful, the new
vaccine could be a key weapon against a flu pandemic because stockpiles
could be made in advance.
Official estimates of the impact of such a pandemic in Britain show it
could lead to 750,000 deaths, with more than six million children
affected, including 750,000 under five. Lead researcher Dr Sarah
Gilbert said the vaccine could be used routinely in as little as five
years, once tests had been done to ensure its safety and efficacy.
She said a
universal vaccine would drastically change the way flu vaccine is used'

Demand
For Gold Surging But Price Keeps On Falling - What's Going On?
'Gold
market manipulation conspiracy theorists should be having a field
day.
The past few weeks have seen solid evidence that physical gold demand from individuals is soaring. We
have seen the U.S. Mint having to suspend
one ounce Gold Eagle coin sales because of
what it terms ‘unprecedented demand', Indian gold
sales have picked up enormously in the past few weeks leading to
purchasers having to wait several days for deliveries as the
traditional sellers are short of gold,
while yesterday we hear that Abu Dhabi, a major trading centre for
precious metals, has seen gold sales rise
by 300 percent in volume and 250 percent in value in August compared
with a year ago.'

The Kommersant newspaper reports that Cheney was very annoyed by the
results of the meeting with President Aliyev and even refused to attend

David
Blunkett Says People Should Work Until They Drop
In a
speech to the
Counsel and Care charity in London, he said people should stop assuming
that the Government had "prime responsibility" for supporting them
through "the ever increasing years of retirement". The former Work and
Pensions Secretary said people should be prepared to use equity release
schemes to pay for their care in retirement, rather than protecting the
value of their inheritances to their families. Mr Blunkett said that he
believed that carrying on in "work activity", whether full-time or
part-time, for as long as possible should form part of the "social care
agenda" for the future.
He said:
"My
presumption is this. That all of us, every one of us who is capable of
doing so, should aspire to continue with some meaningful activity to
the point of our incapacity overtaking us.

that you can receive them as intended to your mailbox. However, we'd
like to request that ALL subscribers now use the website to view newly
