Dewey and the Chaos of Contemporary Public Education (usa)

The dismal and declining student
performance at
America’s public schools is no accident. Nor is the pervasive bullying
by peers and repression by teachers that the brightest, best-mannered,
and most accomplished students encounter in public schools today.
Both are the direct results of the
educational
philosophy promulgated by John Dewey (1859-1952), the originator of
“Progressive” education and a self-proclaimed advocate of collectivism
and opponent of teaching objective knowledge in the schools. Dewey’s
ideas have largely shaped the ways in which today’s American public
education system works—or, more accurately, does not work.
To call John Dewey a socialist is no
exaggeration
or derogatory epithet. It is the literal truth. Dewey read and greatly
admired Edward Bellamy’s 1887 novel, Looking Backward,
which described an egalitarian utopia in which private property was
abolished and the capitalist system was a relic of the past. In the
1920s, Dewey wrote extensively in praise of the Soviet education
system—so much that he was invited to visit the Soviet Union in 1928
and observe schools in the USSR. He based many of his recommendations
for American education on the Soviet model.
Two of Dewey’s foremost targets were
individualism and objective truth. In his 1920 work, Reconstruction in Philosophy,
Dewey vehemently opposed the classic Western idea of the individual as
“something given, something already there.” Consequently, he derided
the free, capitalistic society, where the individual tends to be viewed
as “something to be catered to, something whose pleasures are to be
magnified and possessions multiplied.”
(...) If Dewey were alive today to see
America’s
public schools, he would not consider them failures. They are the
faithful embodiments of everything he wished to attain. If anything,
Dewey would want the public schools to teach even fewer objective facts
and allow even less outstanding individual accomplishment by students.
But those of us who desire a
future in which people are free, prosperous, and competent will beg to
differ.
Excellent piece. I would like to bring
one point,
however. The United States was not established as a “capitalist
society”; it was established as a “free market society” in which the
government had no role outside regulating interstate commerce.
“Capitalism” was a term coined by Karl
Marx. It is
a misnomer, just as the term “democracy”, used to describe our system
of government today, is also a misnomer.
As established, we are a “free market
society” in a “constitutional republic”; we aren’t a capitalist society
in a democracy.
Both of these terms refer to tenants of
socialism/communism. In writing Federalist #10, James Madison made it
very plain that the Founding Fathers held great disdain for
“democracy.” In the words of Madison, the form of government itself has
no tolerance for mischiefs of faction and would ever be as short in its
life as it was violent in its death as it is rule by majority with the
rights of the minority at the whim of the majority; that under such a
form of government no man was secure in his rights, his person or his
property (which includes conscience).

station de radio montréalaise avec Français Saillant,
alors
porte-parole du lobby des parasites du logement social, le FRAPRU,

qui a
mené au parti Québec solidaire. La question du jour
était, si mes
souvenirs sont bons, «Y a-t-il une place pour la gauche au
Québec?».
Le point que je cherchais à défendre
était qu'il faudrait plutôt se demander s'il y avait une
place pour les non-étatistes,
puisque tout l'espace politique était occupé par les

droite ou de gauche. À un moment donné, j'ai
créé une grande confusion
dans le studio en disant à M. Saillant qu'il avait en fait bien

choses en commun que moi avec le président Bush, tous les deux
étant
des partisans d'un État dépensier et interventionniste
(hé oui, c'était
déjà tout à fait évident en 2003),

qu'ils souhaitaient imposer à la population étaient un
peu différents.
Cinq ans plus tard, c'est avec une grande satisfaction
que je
constate que mon affirmation d'alors est maintenant devenue un lieu
commun. La preuve en est la caricature dans l'édition
d'aujourd'hui de La Presse,
qui montre le président portant un t-shirt avec l'effigie de
Marx. Le
titre dit: «Fin de règne du 43e président des
États-Unis: Karl W.
Bush». Wouahahahaha!!!
Pourquoi se surprendre, comme le faisait hier dans La
Presse
l'illettré économique Alain Dubuc, que Bush (qu'il
croyait être un
«apôtre de la non-intervention») propose aujourd'hui
«le projet le plus
étatiste que son pays ait connu depuis 50 ans»? C'est
pourtant tout à
fait dans l'ordre des choses. Bush a toujours été un
«big government conservative».
Tout autant que Saillant l'ancien militant marxiste-léniniste,
ou
encore que les pseudo libertariens qui appuient le plan Paulson et les
interventions de la Fed, ses politiques s'inspirent du Manifeste du Parti
communiste de Karl Marx.
Les libertariens clament depuis des décennies
aux États-Unis

Marx proposed 10 measures to be implemented after the proletariat takes
over power, with the aim of centralizing all instruments of production
in the hands of the state. Proposal #5 was to bring about the
"centralization of credit in the banks of the state, by means of a
national bank with state capital and an exclusive monopoly."
If
he were to rise from the dead today, Marx might be delighted to
discover that most economists and financial commentators, including
many who claim to favour the free market, agree with him.
Indeed, analysts at several
organisations known to oppose government intervention, and commentators
in the Wall Street Journal
and in this very page, have made declarations in favour of the massive
"injection of liquidities" engineered by central banks in recent
months, the government takeover of giant financial institutions, as
well as the still stalled $700-billion bailout package. Some of the
same voices were calling for similar interventions following the burst
of the dotcom bubble in 2001.
"Whatever happened to the modern
followers of my free-market opponents?" Marx would likely wonder.
At first glance, anyone who understands
economics
can see that there is something wrong with this picture. The taxes that
will need to be levied to finance this package may keep some firms
alive, but they will siphon off capital, kill jobs and make businesses
less productive elsewhere. Increasing the money supply is no different.
It is an invisible tax that redistributes resources to debtors and
those who made unwise investments.
So why throw this sound free-market
analysis overboard as soon as there is some downturn in the markets?
The rationale for intervening always
seems to
centre on the fear of reliving the Great Depression. If we let too many
institutions fail because of insolvency, we are being told, there is a
risk of a general collapse of financial markets, with the subsequent
drying out of credit and the catastrophic effects this would have on
all sectors of production. This opinion, shared by Ben Bernanke, Henry
Paulson and most of the right-wing political and financial
establishments, is based on Milton Friedman's thesis that the Fed
aggravated the Depression by not pumping enough money into the
financial system following the market crash of 1929.
It sounds libertarian enough. The
misguided
policies of the Fed, a government creature, and bad government
regulation are held responsible for the crisis. The need to respond to
this emergency and keep markets running overrides concerns about taxing
and inflating the money supply. This is supposed to contrast with the
left-wing Keynesian approach, whose solutions are strangely very
similar despite a different view of the causes.
