Two
activists from Menchu's party were shot dead this week while distributing
leaflets, but most of the victims have been from Colom's National Unity for
Hope party.
In one of the most brazen attacks, the 28-year-old son of human rights activist Amilcar Mendez was killed by gunmen as he left work in mid-August after he helped his father alert rights groups in Washington to death threats against
candidates.
"We
used to be victims of the war," said Mendez as his wife cried inconsolably
over their son's murder. "Now we are victims of the peace."
Normally, women have two X chromosomes (XX) and men have an X or Y chromosome (XY) in their cells.
However,
some people born with a Y chromosome develop all the physical characteristics
of a woman except internal sex organs -- androgen insensitivity syndrome
or AIS.
The woman might be XY but still not a man because her body never responds to the testosterone she's producing.
Seven of the eight
women who tested positive for Y chromosomes during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics had AIS. They were allowed to compete.
Prosecutors in a case involving the sexual abuse of children in Mexico
have failed to hand over to the courts 10 video recordings and 70 photos
that show the accused, who claims to have friends in high places, in compromising
circumstances with minors.
"The
accused and those who were involved with him are being protected by influential
people," freelance Mexican journalist and activist Lydia Cacho said Wednesday.
She added that the case has "international ramifications" and is linked to
other criminal activities like the trafficking and forced disappearance of
persons.
Cacho
has received death threats and was even briefly thrown into prison in late
2005 for exposing a powerful child prostitution and pornography ring operating
in the popular beach resort of Cancún, in her 2004 book "Los demonios
del Edén" (The Demons of Eden).
